Great Places To Eat in Plant City

Grandpa Johnson's BBQ

The restaurant’s reputation has grown throughout central Florida as the place to go for authentic, un-pretentious, traditional Southern food.  Fresh vegetables, slow roasted meats, simple food– real food. Our tradition of BBQ in the Johnson family began over 60 years ago in Plant City.  Elton Johnson, began slow-smoking pork shoulders out of his gas station-turned-restaurant in 1954.  He was a gritty, hard-working, but very hospitable man who was brought up in Alabama during the Depression.  He went to work full-time after the 3rd grade, some of his career as a truck driver and also doing other jobs.  He settled down and opened a gas station in Plant City after his second son, Freddy, was born.

Fred's Market

Elton and Evelyn Johnson established a Plant City Tradition of FAMILY DINING & SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY in 1954. It began with a gas station where Evelyn would cook family meals for her husband and children. It wasn’t long before friends and passers-by would show up to enjoy her SOUTHERN COOKIN’ and GENEROUS HOSPITALITY.

Parkesdale Market

The legacy that is now known as Parkesdale Farms began when company founder R.E. (Roy) Parke, Jr. emigrated from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1924 with his family. Roy’s father continued to pursue a vocation in farming after arriving in America with his family. In 1956, the family relocated to Plant City, FL, which was recognized throughout the country as the prime location for growing winter vegetables and strawberries. Thus the first 10 acres of Parkesdale strawberry crops had been planted!

Alafia State Park

Standing out from the relatively flat topography of Central Florida is Alafia River State Park, a reclaimed phosphate mine with some of the most radical elevation changes in the state. This makes it a hot spot for mountain bikers, who traverse the scenic and challenging International Mountain Bike Association trails.

Equestrians and hikers can explore 20 miles of hilly trails through forests and flatwoods, stopping to relax and admire one of the park’s pristine lakes.

Canoeing and fishing opportunities are also available along the South Prong of the Alafia River with some lakes scattered throughout the park.

The park also offers picnic pavilions, a playground, a full-facility campground and a full-service bike shop.

Edward Medard Conservation Park

Originally called Pleasant Grove Park and Reservoir, Edward Medard Park underwent many transformations before it was donated to The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) in 1969 by a mining company. In 1972, Hillsborough County signed an agreement with the District to develop the site as one of the County’s largest regional parks.

Among its main attractions is a 700-acre reservoir used for canoeing, boating, and fishing. Also included is a 3-mile trail that offers equestrians, hikers, and bird watchers a pleasant trip through pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks. Please note, we do not provide horseback riding rentals. You must bring your own horse.

The park also has a disc golf course for those Frisbee enthusiasts who want to enhance their disc-throwing skills, while the beach volleyball court provides the players a scenic view of the sunset. Edward Medard Park also offers picnic shelters, a boardwalk, a playground for the kids, and an observation platform overlooking the reservoir.
